We presented an overview of our beliefs and our philosophy remains unchanged as we continue to grow. During our recent tour of the UK we were further enthused to instil the correct values into all the players in our various programs to become not just better players but better people.

Despite our efforts with the RTP – Respect article we published earlier this year we are still horrified by some of the stories we hear about experiences the players are having in various different environments. Unfortunately it appears here in WA many are still overly concerned with the result or outcome of the matches rather than concentrating on ensuring equal opportunities for players and development of the game as a whole.

PFT Presentation

Results based Coaching at Barcelona’s Academy is seen as an imposter, coaches who deploy this methodology are replaced immediately‘, Xavi (Barcelona & Spain)

Professor Sandy Gordon has vast experience in working with and alongside some of the worlds best (including Sir Alex Ferguson, Glenn McGrath) and he has a great depth of knowledge that he shares with everyone. The theme for the evening was primarily directed towards parents, coaches and teachers on the best practice in nurturing talented young players, in helping them make the most of their potential.

PFT – Parents Information Evening Presentation

Professor Gordon spoke of the role behaviour has on us all and how we behave/react to situations will ultimately lead to how successful we can be. We can only control certain things and we must all focus on ‘control of these controllables’ rather than worry or become negative about the areas out with our control. This will hopefully allow us to make the right choices in any given situation. We all make mistakes but learning from them is how we grow. As coaches and teachers it is vital that we can create an environment where making a mistake is not the end of the world or affects a players performance so much that they are unwilling to take a risk and trust their talent.

As coaches it is important that we allow players to make their own choices which will result in increased performance levels and enable them to fulfil their potential. As you can see from the Newcastle United Presentation no child has a parent sitting at the back of their Maths classroom calling out the answers so why do so many coaches or parents distract the players during a match, believing that they are the experts? This is not only a distraction for the one player but every player on the field of play.

Talent is a job, not a gift! The stigma attached to compliments such as ‘Great Win’ should be replaced with ‘Great Effort’ if we are to get the good to become great, being talented is the easy part. Achieving ultimate satisfaction in being the best you can be can only be accomplished with a strong work ethic, being prepared to perform at your best, mastering your talent and most importantly mental toughness.

In top level modern sport the mental aspect is paramount to success, winning is one thing but repeating this feat day in day out, week in week out and year after year means you must be strong enough mentally to handle every situation that comes your way, adapting and changing to handle it in the best possible manner in which to achieve your goals.
